The next few weeks will reveal whether your children will have to live in poverty. There’s a real chance that they will.
Below, I explain what action I think the government should take. I’ll also tell you what YOU need to do right now. Before we all become energy paupers.
You see, as you read this, a huge gaggle of protesters is hanging around in Kent. If they get their way, Britain will be in more trouble than it is already.
These campaigners are intent on launching a mass protest at Kingsnorth power station. They do not want the new coal-fired plant to be built.
The government has to ensure they do not win. It is the most important thing it could do to guarantee future prosperity.
Let me explain…
Britain is resource-poor In the future, resource-rich countries will hold all the wealth. Resource-poor countries will have to kowtow to their wishes.
Britain will be in the resource-poor category.
We became a net importer of gas two years ago. North Sea oil is running out.
Does this scare you? If not, it should.
If we don’t get our energy strategy up and running NOW, we are going to have to rely on Russian gas. We might as well hand over our country to the Kremlin lock stock and barrel.
The Russians will squeeze us til we bleed! When we are utterly dependent on Russia, they will hike up the price. The Russian power brokers will not give one thought to the average Briton.
High energy costs are already crippling businesses – and this is just the start. If our country is unable to function without expensive Russian gas our economy will crumble.
We are in danger of becoming a third-world country.
That’s why the battle for Kingsnorth is so important.
Coal is one of the key energy sources that will bridge the looming energy gap.
By 2012, the last of the Magnox nuclear reactors will have closed. A number of older coal-fired stations may also have been shut down. If we don’t do something about it, the lights could go out.
The UK can deglobalise its energy strategy Coal is not ideal because it is dirty. But there is one major advantage – we have lots and lots of the stuff. We even have coal reserves offshore, so we could end up mining the sea. It’s a perfect example of deglobalisation
Using our coal reserves instead of relying on expensive foreign exports will ensure our future prosperity. Coal can fill the gap until we build our new generation of nuclear power stations… which will make us virtually emissions free.
So the battle for Kingsnorth is a proxy for the future wealth of this country. If the tofu-munching sandal wearers win, the rest of us will all lose.
Why I may have to learn French I have despaired over Britain’s energy strategy for years. I don’t want to live in a poverty stricken country. If this came true, I’d move to France, where they are already generating around 80% of their energy from nuclear power. The main problem is that I don’t speak French.
Should the unthinking dogmatists at the crustie camp in Kent get their way in the coming months, I’m going to have to book myself in for some French lessons. It’s a shame. I like my country, but I won’t have any choice.
Here’s what I recommend you do Common sense must surely prevail – energy is too important a sector to be dictated by the whims of the trendy.
Specifically, there is
one coal investment I have great faith in. Earlier today, I emailed every reader of my Smart Commodities newsletter and told them to buy it.
